Launch of Cruise Guide Education Programme

Because Wismar’s guests want to know everything: Wismar Tourist Board launches new cruise guide education programme digitally.

What is being built in that huge hall there? What about Wismar ‘s industry? How do Wismar’s locals work and live?

Wismar’s guests come from along the world and are also interested in more than Wismar’s eventful and vivid history.
They want to know what is being built in the shipyard hall, why a cruise ship is moored in the port or how the Hanseatic city is likely going to develop in future.

The Wismar Tourist Board has started a cruise guide education programme that aims at meeting exactly these needs. ‘Beyond the history into the present and future of our city, guests should be given the opportunity to learn interesting facts about Wismar available in several languages’, says Ms Sibylle Donath, head of department for Tourism and Culture, who conceptualized the programme. Tourism head, Ms Louisa Sterling is now pleased about the great popularity.

Mid-April was the starting signal for the first 20 attendees: digitally. Under the direction of lecturer Ms Karin Schatzberg, the first module ‘Guiding Cruise Guests’ was on the agenda.

The cruise guide education programme is offered by the Wismar Tourist Board in cooperation with WINGS – Wismar International Graduation Services GmbH.
Within the framework of the joint project JOHANNA, Wismar and further partners in the Baltic Sea region have committed themselves to the qualification of cruise guides and cruise coordinators in the southern Baltic Sea region.

Theory classes are usually held Saturdays, last six hours per module and are scheduled to end Mid-July. In ten teaching units, attendees can enrich their knowledge from a wide portfolio of different relevant topics ranging from urban history to urban development, monument preservation, world heritage, art history, building preservation and building research.

In addition, self-taught research of new topics, law and taxes, service quality, customer expectations, cruise tourism, cruise guest leadership, leadership skills and techniques will be on the agenda as well.

Since all teaching units are documented by video recording, it is possible to catch up on missed modules in terms of studying by one’s own in order to obtain the certification as a tour guide.

Due to the holiday, the next class session will also be held digitally on May 2, 2021. Anyone who would like to register for the free training, please contact:
